What is IFMGA?

IFMGA Badge

The IFMGA Badge.

IFMGA stands for International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations. The IFMGA carnet is the highest internationally recognised qualification for instruction and guiding in rock and ice climbing, mountaineering and off-piste skiing and ski touring.

This badge, recognised throughout the mountain world is your guarantee of their professional training and competence in all aspects of mountaineering and client care.

Only IFMGA guides are allowed to work in the high mountains, on glaciers, etc. in most Alpine countries. Anyone else offering their services in this capacity are breaking the law and more importantly are not insured for liability, and using then will also probably invalidate your insurance. Guides are not just leaders, but can also train you in any of the disciplines for which their qualification covers.
