Walking and Trekking

Walking is probably the principle summer activity in the mountains. The lure of scented forests, sparking lakes and streams, flower laden pastures and rugged high mountain passes has a never ending appeal. The Chamonix region of the Alps in particular is a region of contrasts, with tumbling glaciers and barren limestone plateaux contrasting with the forests and meadows. It is also the location of many long distance footpaths, or Grand Randonees (GRs), the classic being the Tour Du Mont Blanc, but there are many other just as spectacular, and sometimes quieter GRs such as:

  • Tour du Pays Du Mont Blanc
  • GR5 (Traverse of the Alps, Lake Geneva to Nice)
  • Tour du Beaufortain

Hiring a mountain leader or accompagnateur, can greatly enhance your walking experience, taking you to the best viewpoints and showing you all the hidden treasures you might not otherwise spot, such as the flora and fauna. The area is rich in wildlife such as the Ibex, Chamois eagles and the recently re-introduced bearded vulture, a huge bird, and truly magnificent site in flight. On a practical front, a guide can also organise overnight accommodation in mountain refuges, an essential and great experience of the long distance trails.
