Vallée Blanche
The famous Vallée Blanche is an off-piste ski route, 20km long with a vertical descent of 2700m. It starts from the top of the Aiguille du Midi cable car at an altitude of 3870m and descends through the heart of the Mont Blanc massif down the the cable railway at Montenvers where you take a train back down to Chamonix. The views are stunning and the high mountain environment provides a real sensation of wilderness. This is one of those memorable life experiences that you’ll never forget.
If the right conditions, this outstanding descent is within the capabilities of most intermediate skiers and is a fantastic journey into one of the largest glaciated regions in the Alps.
About half-way down on the Vallée Blanche, you can stop in the Requin Hut, a remote mountain refuge, and have an excellent meal and drinks, or alternatively you can stop and have a picnic on the fatter part of the glacier and take in the awe inspiring scenery.
At the start of the Valle Blanche, you have to want down a steep arete. During the season, this is equiped with a handrail, and your mountain guide will have you roped together for safety. You guide will also provide you with safety equipment, (harnesses and avalanche transceivers) for safe travel in the glaciated terrain.
While the classic route is well within the capabilities of an intermediate skier, there are many variations offering good skiers a far sterner challenge.
