Snowshoes open up the spectacular beauty of the alps in winter to any keen walker. Easy to learn within a few minutes, snowshoeing provides access to remote scenery previously only enjoyed by experienced ski tourers. In fact so many people are realising the benefits of snowshoeing that it is the fastest growing winter sport.

While it is easy to learn, it is still important to hire the services of a mountain leader, a traveling through snow covered mountains safely requires an experienced head with a knowledge of avalanche awareness.

The region around Chamonix provides endless snowshoeing opportunities, typical itineraries may include some of the following:

  • Ascent of the Croise Baulet (2286m), a beautiful peak that dominates the Arve valley ,offering fantastic views of the Mont Blanc Massif, and south towards the Tarentaise
  • Ascent of the Aiguillette Des Houches (2285m). At the entrance to the Chamonix valley, this peak provides a wonderful panorama over the Chamonix valley, and westwards over the Aravis.
  • Ascent to the Emosson Dam, just over the border in Switzerland, this spectacular dam, perched over the valley floor at just under 2000m is a spectacle in itself, as well as offering panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif, and down the Rhone valley into Switzerland.
  • Ascent to the Col du Grande St Bernard where there is the possibility of an overnight stay in the refuge that is part of the famous monastery.
